How I Keep My Pets Calm Before We Go Away

Leaving your pets when you go away isn’t always easy.

As much as we look forward to a break, there’s often that lingering worry — will they be okay without us? Changes in routine, different people, and a shift in their environment can feel unsettling for our pets, even if they’re being well cared for.

We’ve just been away ourselves, and I know firsthand how stressful it can be organising care. We were so lucky to have my mum stay with our cats this time, which made such a difference — for them and for us.

Over time, I’ve found a few simple things that really help keep our pets feeling calm, safe, and settled while we’re away.

1. Keep Their Routine as Normal as Possible

Pets thrive on routine.

Feeding times, sleep habits, playtime — these small, everyday patterns help them feel secure. Before we go away, I make sure everything stays as close to normal as possible.

Even small disruptions can cause stress, so consistency is key.

2. Have Someone They Know and Trust

If possible, having a familiar person care for your pet can make a huge difference.

Whether it’s a family member, friend, or regular pet sitter, that sense of familiarity helps reduce anxiety and makes the transition much smoother.

3. Leave Clear Notes for Consistency

I always leave detailed notes to make things easy for whoever is looking after them.

This includes:

  • Feeding routines

  • Sleep preferences

  • Any little quirks or habits

  • Things that help them feel calm

The more consistent things are, the more settled your pet will feel.

4. Add Flower Essences to Their Drinking Water

One of my favourite ways to support our pets emotionally is by adding our Contented Pet flower essence drops to their drinking water.

It’s such a simple, gentle addition to their routine — but it can make a big difference in helping them feel more calm and balanced during times of change.

5. Leave Support Tools on Hand

I also like to leave our Contented Pet Mist on hand for extra support while we’re away.

That way, whoever is caring for them can easily use it if needed — whether it’s during a moment of restlessness, after a change in environment, or just as part of their daily routine.

6. Create a Calm, Familiar Environment

Before we leave, I make sure their space feels calm and familiar.

Things like:

  • Their favourite sleeping spots

  • Blankets that smell like home

  • Keeping their usual areas accessible

These little comforts can go a long way in helping them feel safe.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

At the end of the day, it’s not about doing anything complicated — it’s about creating a sense of comfort, consistency, and calm.

We’ve found that putting these small steps in place makes such a difference. Not only do our pets settle more easily, but we’re also able to truly relax knowing they feel safe and supported.

Because when your pets feel calm and content…you can enjoy your time away with peace of mind.
